Characteristics

Leaves 2·5–13 × 0·2–2·5 cm., lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, minutely ciliate-pubescent, narrowly cuneate at the base, the apex acute; main veins on each side of the midrib 11–17; petiole 2–20 mm. long.

Capsule 20–34 × 2–3 mm., thin-walled, puberulent, terete, pale brown with 8 darker brown ribs, readily and irregularly loculicidal; pedicel 2–8 mm. long.
Seeds 0·5–0·6 × 0·3–0·4 mm., pluriseriate in each locule of the capsule, free, pale brown, obovoid; raphe c. 1/6 the diameter of the body.
Stamens 4; filaments 2·5–4 mm. long; anthers 2–3 mm. long, extrorse and not shedding pollen directly on the stigma.
Tall herb, sometimes woody near the base, up to 3 m. tall, puberulent or strigulose especially on the young parts.
Disk 1·5–2·5 mm. high, conical, with a depressed white-hairy nectary surrounding the base of each petal.
Style 3·5–5 mm. long; stigma 1–2 mm. thick, globose, 4-lobulate.
Sepals 4, 6–13 × 1·4–3·5 mm., lanceolate-deltate.
Petals 10–15 × 10–16 mm., broadly obovate.
Pollen shed in tetrads.
