Characteristics

Stems climbing or trailing to several metres. Tendrils 2–5-branched. Probract ovate, 3 mm long, glandular. Leaves ovate, cordate at base; lamina 25–50 mm long, 35–60 mm wide, sinuate-dentate to shallowly 3–5-lobed, obtuse, mucronate. Male flowers in 10–16-flowered racemes 30–80 mm long, or sometimes solitary; peduncle 15–40 mm long; pedicels 5–15 mm long, subtended by glandular bracts; hypanthium 2–3 mm long; calyx-lobes triangular to lanceolate, 4–6 mm long; petals ovate to spathulate, 12–20 mm long; stamens 3. Female flowers on pedicels 3–5 mm long; ovary 8–12 mm long, pilose and shortly spinose. Fruit ovoid, attenuate, 25–45 mm long, 20–30 mm diam., echinate. Seed 7–8 mm long, dark brown, mottled black.
