Characteristics

Shrub, 0.6-1.2 m high. Stems rigidly erect, zigzag; young stems greyish white, older stems dark purplish brown and glossy. Leaves clustered on branchlets and thorns, 3-8 per cluster, succulent, subsessile; clustered on stems and thorns; blade narrowly elliptic or obovate, 10-15 x 1-2 mm, bluish green; petioles < 6 mm long. Flowers: bisexual; stamens and style conspicuously exserted from corolla mouth, stamens inserted in corolla mouth, pilose filament bases visible in corolla mouth; ring-shaped nectar at ovary base red; calyx tubular to campanulate, 2.5-4.0 mm long, calyx lobes shorter than calyx tube, triangular, ± the same length as corolla tube; corolla broadly campanulate, tube 4-5 mm long, glabrous outside, pilose inside at stamen insertion, white with lobes pale lilac, veins purple, lobes 3-4 mm long, spreading; Sep.-Apr. Fruit a spherical berry, ± 4 mm in diameter, orange-red.
