Characteristics

Annual herb not or scarcely drying black, main stem c. 30-200 mm tall, simple at first, later loosely branched near the base, branches ± sharply ascending, thinly glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.2-0.4 mm long, scattered glistening glands as well, leafy. Leaves opposite, few (stems often floriferous nearly from base), c. 7-33 x 3-9 mm, narrowly elliptic tapering to a petiolar part up to 1/3 total leaf length, rapidly shorter upwards, apex acute to subobtuse, margins entire to few-toothed, both surfaces hairy as stems. Flowers few to many in terminal racemes. Bracts alternate, leaf-like, lowermost c. 8-24 x 2-7 mm Pedicels (lowermost) 4-11 mm long. Calyx tube 0.2-0.5 mm long, lobes 4-6.5 x 0.6-1 mm, thinly glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.25-0.6 mm long, sparse glistening glands as well. Corolla tube c. 24-32 x 1.4-1.7 mm, cylindric, expanded in throat to c. 2.8 mm, limb nearly regular, c. 16-18 mm across, lobes c. 5-8 x 3-8 mm, broadly and bluntly spathulate, tube and backs of lobes glandular-puberulous, hairs c. 0.25 mm long, few glistening glands as well on upper part, upper surface of lobes glabrous except for a broad band of minute glands around mouth, band of upward-pointing clavate hairs in throat, limb shades of pink, rose-mauve and lavender, base of each lobe marked with 3 orange/yellow streaks coalescing into a band around the throat, tips of streaks sometimes dark violet. Stamens 2, filaments 1-2 mm long, anthers 1.6-2 mm long, just visible in mouth, staminodes 2, c. 0.3 mm long. Stigma 1-1.5 mm long, just exerted. Style 21-27 mm long, glandular-puberulous. Ovary 2.5-3 x 1.3-1.5 mm, thinly glandular-puberulous, hairs c. 0.2-0.25 mm long, glistening glands nearly confined to a broad band down the sutures. Capsules c. 7-10 x 3.5-4.5 mm, hairy as the ovaries. Seeds c. 0.8-1 x 0.5 mm.
