Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 10 m high, monoecious. Minute rusty trichomes glabrescent on stems; petioles, stipules and laminae glabrous. Stipules c. 0.2–0.5 cm long, caducous. Leaves alternate, occasionally opposite; petiole 1–7 cm long; lamina lanceolate or elliptic, 7.5–32 cm long, 1.5–7.5 (–11) cm wide, base cuneate or minutely auriculate, margin entire or dentate, apex acute, acuminate or rounded, venation penniveinved, lower surface with peltate scales, occasionally tufted at the midvein and lateral vein junction. Male flowers racemose; bract 1–1.5 mm long, cup-shaped; stamens c. 10–20, filaments 0.8–1.2 mm long. Female flowers racemose, paniculate or umbellate; bract single or paired, 0.25–2 mm long, oblong-triangular; ovary bilobed, scaly, pubescent and bristly; styles 2, 6–12 mm long. Capsule 5–7 mm long, 7–10 mm wide, bilobed, pubescent, scaly, bristles conic.
