Characteristics

Plants shortly rhizomatous. Stems short, simple, underground. Leaves flat. Scapes several. Inflorescence a panicle of many-flowered, one-sided racemes. Perianth zygomorphic, deeply lobed, tomentose outside with plumose black hairs; lobes unequal, recurved against tube; inner surface green. Stamens 6, inserted near top of tube, flattened, exserted in a falcate hood-like cluster; anthers basifixed, the connective dorsally decurrent with a small apical appendage, locules free at base. Ovary inferior; ovule 1 per locule; style filiform, straight at base then falcate, projecting shortly beyond anthers; stigma entire. Fruit with persistent septa, each locule and seed falling entire. Seed orbicular, hairy, glabrous inside, with a prominent interseptal ridge, fawn.
