Characteristics

Monoecious tall trees with greyish bark; twigs, leaves and inflorescences initially densely fasciculate-hairy. Leaves with 4–11 pairs of leaflets; rhachis 4-angled, with lines of simple hairs on the angles; leaflets ovate to lanceolate, slightly asymmetric, entire, glabrescent. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate, flowers subtended by herbaceous bracts. Flowers regular; sepals 5, free, concave, herbaceous, externally hairy; petals 4, caducous, without claw or scale; disk a complete circle. Stamens 7–8(–10); filaments folded in bud, glabrous; anthers sagittate. Ovary 3-lobed, 3-locular with 2 ovules in each locule; style long, hairy, with a glabrous channelled tip. Fruit a dehiscent trigonous capsule, opening to reveal 3 bright pink valves. Seeds 1–2 per valve, ovoid, without aril, softly velvety, blue-black; cotyledons spirally arranged.
