Cultivation

Look at Sawyer Baldwin. Red Baron. Origin: in Excelsior, Minn., by Hort. Res. Sta. Introd. in 1969. Golden Delicious × Red Van Buren. Cross made in 1926 by W.H. Alderman and selected by him in 1940; tested as Minn. 1500; released in 1969 by Cecil Stushnoff. Tree: size medium; medium open; vigor moderate; hardiness equal to Haralson; very productive; tolerant to fire blight. Fruit: size medium; round truncate, regular; skin creamy yellow ground cover with 80% to 100% bright red blush, glossy, medium thick, tough, attractive; flesh crisp, juicy subacid; ripens 20 Sept., same season as Wealthy; good storage quality; for fresh fruit, pies, and sauce.
