Cultivation

Look at Close. Red Van Buren (Double-Red Duchess, Red Duchess, Van Buren). Origin: in New York by J.P. Van Buren. Introd. in 1937. Parentage unknown; discovered in 1914; evidence seems to indicate this variety did not arise as a bud mutation of Duchess. Tree: Fruit: similar to Duchess in flavor and quality, but larger and a solid, dark-red blush, attractive. Named after B.D. Van Buren, former President of the New York State Fruit Testing Assn. However, this variety is not related to the Van Buren variety described by W.H. Ragan in U.S. Dept. Agr. Bul. 56, 1905.
