Characteristics

Tree up to 18-32 m high and 30-90(-120) cm ø, once recorded with buttresses up to 5 m high, 2 m wide, 5 cm thick (BW 7272). Bark grey, light brown, or brown, deeply vertically fissured, broadly ridged. Leaves chartaceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, sometimes oblanceolate, 12-19 by 3½-5½ cm; base cuneate; apex acuminate, obtuse, or acute; nerves 10-20 pairs, slightly elevated beneath, distinct above; veins reticulate, faint or obscure; petiole 1-3 cm, biconvex, or slightly concave above. Panicles terminal, sometimes also in the uppermost leaf axil, pyramidal, up to 30 cm long, glabrous; lateral branches up to 16 cm, laxly flowered; floral bracts ovate or lanceolate, 1-2 mm long; pedicels 3-4 mm. Flowers yellowish, fragrant. Calyx 5-lobed, lobes ovate or ovate-oblong, 2-2½ mm long, glabrous. Petals narrowly elliptic, or linear, 5-6 by l-1½ mm; ridges 3(-5), c. ⅔ the length of petals, confluent at the basal 2-2½ mm. Disk shortcupular, 1-1½ mm high, 1-2 mm wide, 5-lobed, papillose. Stamens 5, 1 fertile, 2½-5 mm; filaments free; anthers oblong, c. ⅔ mm long; staminodes ⅙-⅔ mm. Ovary subglobose, ½ mm ø; style excentric, 4 mm. Sterile pistil in c. ⅓ mm. Drupe (fresh or dried) obliquely oblong, 5—10 by 4—6½ cm, flesh thin or nearly fleshless, with one fibrous, large stone. Seed not labyrinthine.

The leaf stalk is 1-3 cm long. The flowers occur on the ends of branches in a much branched flower arrangement. These stalks are 30 cm long. The individual flowers are small. The flowers have a scent. Fruit are yellow green and flattened at the sides and with one large seed inside. They are smaller than mango. They can be 6-10 cm long by 4-7 cm wide. The fruit have stringy flesh. It is edible. The stone is very fibrous.

Environment

A tropical plant. It occurs mainly in the lowlands and foothills below 750 m altitude but grows up to 1900 m altitude. It occurs as scattered individuals. It prefers damp, even wet ground. It is common near the foreshore. They grow in the humid tropics.
