Characteristics

Leaves in whorls of 3–4 or opposite, but appearing densely verticillate due to abbreviated axillary shoots, 0.5–2.5 cm. x 0.4–1 mm., subulate, rigid, the margins and midribs scabrid-ciliate; stipular sheath c. 1 mm. long, mostly shortly sparsely ciliate.

Inflorescences 1–7-flowered contracted cymes, densely bracteate, axillary in the top 7–30 spaced nodes, the whole spike-like, up to 30 cm. long; bracts similar to leaves, 2–5 mm. long; pedicels 0.5–1 mm. long.
Corolla white, glabrous outside; tube 1–1.3 x 0.8 mm., cylindric-funnel-shaped, with a ring of hairs inside at the throat; lobes 1.1–1.7 x 0.7–1 mm., triangular-ovate, papillate inside, the tip inflexed.
Strictly erect perennial herb 40–90 cm. tall with 1-several stems, woody at the base, 3–4-angled, glabrescent or finely shortly pubescent when young.
Calyx tube 1.2 mm. long, ovoid, glabrous but with obvious surface raphides; lobes 4, 1.3–1.5 mm. long, subulate, scabrid-ciliate.
Seeds 1–2(3) per loculus, brown, oblong, dorsiventrally flattened, 0.9 x 0.38 mm., the testa reticulate.
Anthers exserted in short-styled flowers, just included in long-styled flowers.
Style 1.8 mm. long in long-styled, 0.5 mm. in short-styled flowers.
Capsule 1.7 x 1.3 mm. ellipsoid.
