Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 1-c. 7 from the base, 30-110 mm tall, erect, simple, glandular-puberulous in lower part, hairs up to 0.2 mm long, becoming sparse upwards, inflorescence axis sometimes nearly glabrous, but often with tiny balloon-tipped hairs, leafless. Leaves opposite, bases connate, few, crowded at base of plant, blade c. 4-12 x 2.5-6.5 mm, elliptic tapering to a broad petiolar part c. 2-5 mm long, roughly 1/2-1/3 as long as blade, margins entire to obscurely toothed, both surfaces glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.3 mm long. Flowers many, crowded in terminal racemes. Bracts (lowermost) 1.6-2 x 0.8-1 mm, lanceolate. Pedicels (lowermost) 1.5-6(-10) mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.3-0.5 mm long, lobes 2.2-3.2 x 0.4-0.5 mm, linear-oblong, pubescent mainly on margins (a few median hairs sometimes on back), hairs up to 0.2-0.4 mm long, mostly gland-tipped, occasionally balloon-tipped hairs also present, as well as ± sessile glistening glands. Corolla tube 4-5.5 x 0.8-1.2 mm in throat, cylindric, upper half inflated, limb almost regular, 8-14 mm across, lobes 3.6-5.6 x 2-4 mm, ± deltoid in outline, apex deeply and sharply bilobed, some lobes again lobed or retuse, white (sometimes blue or mauve?) with a yellow star-shaped patch around mouth and extending down back of tube, puberulous outside, hairs minute, inside a posticous longitudinal band of clavate hairs and a transverse band in throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.25-0.5 mm long, posticous anthers 0.6-1.1 mm long, all included, posticous filaments glabrous, or sometimes bearded (see comments below). Stigma 0.6-1.3 mm long, tip sometimes bifid, deeply included. Style 0.3-0.5 mm long, much shorter than stigma. Ovary 0.8-1.1 x 0.5-0.7 mm. Capsules c. 3-3.5 x 2 mm. Seeds 0.5-0.6 x 0.3 mm, pallid.
