Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 100-450 mm tall, often solitary or up to 4 from base, simple or 14 short side shoots, glandular-puberulous, sometimes with very sparse eglandular hairs as well to 0.5 mm, nude or with a few distant much reduced leaves. Leaves opposite and decussate, bases connate, crowded at base of stem, any reduced stem leaves alternate; blade of radical leaves 16-50 x 5-18 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic, tapering to a petiolar part 3-15 mm long (roughly up to 1/3 length of blade), margins shallowly to deeply and sharply toothed, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many, crowded in simple terminal racemes, capitate or subcapitate though a few distant flowers often straggle down the stem. Bracts (lowermost) 6-27 x 0.5-2.5 mm, mostly linear, occasionally leaflike. Pedicels (lowermost) 1-6(-15)mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.2-0.75 mm long, anticous lobes 4.3-9.5 x 0.8-1.75 mm, anticous lip split 4.5-7.5 mm, posticous lobes 4.5-9.5 x 0.6-1.25 mm, posticous lip split 3.5-6 mm, all lobes somewhat pouched in lower half, tips narrow, almost straight, glandular-puberulous all over, hairs up to 0.3-0.4 mm long, sometimes a few eglandular hairs 0.5-1 mm long present as well, particularly on margins, hairy inside. Corolla tube 7-12 x 0.9-1.4 mm in throat, cylindric, dilated near apex, limb 7-11 mm across lateral lobes, nearly regular, posticous lobes 2-4 x 2.1-4.5 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-4 x 2.5-4 mm, all broadly obovate to subrotund, creamy white with yellow/orange star-shaped patch around mouth, tube densely pubescent outside, hairs c. 6.1 mm long, glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs (usually dark-coloured between the posticous anthers) running up and extending round mouth and out onto the yellow patch. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.25-0.5 mm long, just included, posticous anthers 0.75-1 mm long, deeply included, posticous filaments bearded with dark hairs. Stigma 3.5-8.5 mm long, shortly exserted or just included. Style 1.5-3.8 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2.4 x 0.8-2 mm. Capsules 4-5 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds 0.5 x 0.4 mm, violet-blue.
