Manulea arabidea Schltr. ex Hiern

Annual herb, stems several tufted from base or solitary in young plants, 30-210 mm tall, simple or sparingly and distantly branched, minutely glandular-puberulous, occasional eglandular hairs to 1 mm as well, distantly leafy. Leaves opposite and decussate, bases connate, 2 pairs at base of plant then distant upwards at forking of stems, blade up to 7-27 x 3-8 mm, elliptic, tapering to a petiolar part 4-15 mm long (very roughly half to equalling length of blade), margins entire to shallowly toothed, both surfaces minutely glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in simple terminal racemes, crowded at first, distant in fruit. Bracts (lowermost) c. 4-11 x 1-3 mm, leaflike or lanceolate, smaller and linear-lanceolate to linear upwards, glandular-puberulous, a few several-celled, balloon-tipped hairs to 0.4 mm as well. Pedicels (lowermost) 4-11 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.4-0.5 mm long, anticous lobes 1.25-2 x 0.4-0.5 mm, posticous ones slightly smaller, subspathulate, tips often incurved, pubescent all over with tiny gland-tipped hairs and several-celled, balloon-tipped ones to 0.4 mm. Corolla tube 2.75-4 x 1.1-1.3 mm in throat, ± funnel-shaped, limb 5-6 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.5-2 x 1.25-1.6 mm, anticous lobe 2-2.5 x 1.3-1.75 mm, all oblong, very obtuse, white, yellow patch down back of tube, tube minutely glandular-puberulous outside, ± sessile balloon-tipped hairs on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs running out onto lower part of posticous lip and extending around mouth. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.3-0.4 mm long, visible in mouth, posticous anthers 0.4-0.6 mm, included, all filaments glabrous. Stigma 2-3.4 mm long, well exserted. Style 0.5 mm. Ovary 1-1.5 x 0.6-1 mm, subrotund. Capsules c. 3.5 x 3 mm. Seeds (immature) 0.4 x 0.3 mm, pallid or violet-blue (possibly only when very young).
