Characteristics

Annual herb, stems one to several from base, 100-150 mm long, erect or decumbent, sparingly branched, minutely glandular-puberulous, ± distantly leafy. Leaves opposite and decussate at base, bases connate, soon alternate and passing imperceptibly into bracts, blade up to 17-37 x 6-12 mm, smaller upwards, elliptic, tapering to a flat petiolar part 3-10 mm long, margins sharply and narrowly toothed, both surfaces densely glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in simple terminal racemes, subcapitate at first, soon elongate, flowers distant in fruit. Bracts (lowermost) c. 12-19 x 3-6 mm, leaflike, diminishing somewhat in size upwards but raceme decidedly leafy. Pedicels (lowermost) 2-4 mm long, shcfrter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.75-2 mm long, anticous lobes 3.2-6.8 x 0.8-1.8 mm, glandular-puberulous all over, sparse coarse eglandular hairs to c. 1 mm as well. Corolla tube 7-9.5 x 1.2-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, widening near apex, limb 6-12 mm across lateral lobes, nearly regular, posticous lobes 2-3.5 x 2-3.5 mm, anticous lobe 2.4-5 x 1.8-4 mm, all broadly elliptic, very obtuse, white(?) or pale mauve, yellow patch down back of tube, tube glandular-puberulous outside plus occasional eglandular hairs to 0.25-0.4 mm, glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of dark clavate hairs fanning out into pale hairs encircling mouth. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long, visible in mouth, posticous anthers 1 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded with dark hairs. Stigma 7-9 mm long, well exserted. Style 1-3 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2.5 x 0.75-1.3 mm, elliptic. Capsules 4-5 x 3 mm. Seeds 0.5 x 0.3-0.4 mm, pallid.
