Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Manulea

Characteristics

Herb, flowering in seedling stage but clearly persisting for more than one season, taproot woody, to 5 mm diam. at crown, stems (100-)150-350 mm tall, rarely solitary (seedlings), usually several from the crown, simple to laxly branched, glandular-puberulous nearly nude to laxly leafy. Leaves mainly radical, crowded in a rosette, opposite, bases connate, only the upper stem leaves alternate, blade (of radical leaves) 12-55 x 3-13 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic or oblanceolate tapering to a petiolar part c. 3-20 mm long (up to roughly half as long as the blade, but often much shorter), margins entire to distinctly but distantly serrulate to serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous; stem leaves similar but much smaller and sessile. Flowers many in long simple terminal racemes, crowded at first, soon distant, very rarely in few-flowered monochasial cymes near the base of the inflorescence, solitary in the upper part. Bracts (lowermost) 4-10(-28) x 0.3-1(-1.2) mm, occasionally ± leaflike (the longest ones), otherwise linear. Pedicels (lowermost) 1.4-3 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, tube 0.4-1.2 mm long, anticous lobes 2.75-5.5 x 0.7-1.7 mm, anticous lip split 2.5-5.4 mm, posticous lobes 2.5-5 x 0.5-1.2 mm, posticous lip split 2.5-4.5 mm, lobes lanceolate, basal part very slightly pouched, pubescent all over backs and margins, hairs to 0.4-0.8 mm, both balloon-and gland-tipped. Corolla tube 7-14 x 1-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, inflated near apex, limb bilabiate, 6-13 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-4.5 x 1.4-3 mm, anticous lobe 2.2-6 x 1.1-2.2 mm, all oblong, margins revolute, creamy-yellow to orange, tube and lobes puberulous outside with both gland-and balloon-tipped hairs, glabrous inside. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.5-0.8 mm long, visible in mouth, posticous anthers 1.2-1.8 mm long, included, posticous filaments very sparsely bearded or occasionally glabrous. Stigma 4-11 mm long, shortly exserted. Style 1.25-2 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2 x 0.7-1.1 mm. Capsules c. 4.5 x 3 mm, very minutely glandular-puberulous. Seeds c. 0.5 x 0.3 mm, blue-violet. Have been found in flower in most months of the year.
