Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 1-50 tufted from the base, 15-150 mm tall, erect, simple, minutely glandular puberulous plus conspicuous balloon-tipped hairs less than 0.1 mm long, leafless. Leaves opposite, bases connate, crowded at base, blade c. 7-25 x 3-12 mm, elliptic to broadly ovate tapering to a broad flat petiolar part c. 5-26 mm long, (roughly equalling to twice as long as blade), apex subacute to obtuse, margins ± entire to serrate, both surfaces minutely glandular-puberulous with occasional balloon-tipped hairs as well particularly over main veins on lower surface. Flowers many in terminal racemes, crowded initially but axis soon elongating, eventually up to 100 mm long. Bracts (lowermost) 1.5-3 x 0.6-1 mm, lanceolate. Pedicels (lowermost) 1.5-5 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.3-0.5 mm long, lobes 2-4 x 0.4-0.7 mm, oblong-lanceolate, margins minutely glandular-puberulous, conspicuous balloon-tipped hairs less than 0.1 mm long particularly on backs of lobes. Corolla tube 3-4.5 x 0.75-1.1 mm in throat, cylindric, inflated in upper part, limb obscurely bilabiate, rarely distinctly so, 4-7.5(-9) mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.6-2.8(4.1) x 1-1.8 mm, anticous lobe 1.6-3(-3.8) x 0.8-1.8 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, tips ± obtuse, entire, bright yellow (or rarely cream), tube paler with orange patch down back of throat, outside conspicuous balloon-tipped hairs on backs of lobes and inflated part of tube, scattered downwards or wanting there, inside a posticous longitudinal band of clavate hairs together with 3 lesser lateral bands. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.2-0.4 mm long, just included, posticous anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 1-1.8 mm long, deeply included. Style 0.2-0.6 mm long, much shorter than stigma. Ovary 0.8-1.2 x 0.6-0.8 mm. Capsules 3-4.5 x 2-3.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.6 x 0.3 mm, pallid.
