Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Manulea

Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 30-450 mm tall, solitary or up to 7 tufted from the base, often simple, sometimes with 1 or 2 branches near the base, glandular-puberulous with occasional eglandular hairs to 1 mm as well, nude or distantly leafy. Leaves opposite and decussate, bases connate, crowded at base of stem, greatly reduced and subopposite to mostly alternate upwards; blade of radical leaves 9-60 x 5-25 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic, tapering to a petiolar part 3-20 mm long (roughly 1/3 length of blade), margins shallowly to deeply and sharply toothed, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many crowded in simple terminal racemes, capitate or subcapitate though a few distant flowers often straggle down the stem. Bracts (lowermost) 3-35 x 0.5-7 mm, linear to leaflike. Pedicels (lowermost) 1-10 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.2-0.5(-1.1)mm long, anticous lobes 3.84.5(-5.5) x 0.8-1.5 mm, anticous lip split 3.5-4 mm, posticous lobes 3.75-4.8 x 0.8-1 mm, posticous lip split c. 4 mm, all lobes remarkably pouched in lower half and bulging outwards, tips narrow, strongly folded, curving out then in, margins densely bearded with eglandular hairs 0.5-1 mm long, tiny glandular hairs as well, otherwise very nearly glabrous outside except for sparse ± sessile glands, hairy inside. Corolla tube 8.5-12 x 1-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, dilated near apex, limb 7-12 mm across lateral lobes; nearly regular, posticous lobes 2.5-4 x 2.5-4.3 mm, anticous lobe 3-4.5 x 2.5-4.5 mm, all broadly obovate to subrotund, creamy-white with yellow/orange star-shaped patch around mouth, tube densely pubescent outside, hairs c. 0.1-0.3 mm in upper part, glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs (usually dark-coloured between the posticous anthers) running up and extending round mouth and out onto the yellow patch. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.25-0.4 mm long, just included, posticous anthers 0.8-1.25 mm long, deeply included, posticous filaments bearded with dark hairs. Stigma 4-7 mm long, shortly exserted or just included. Style 0.5-3 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2 x 0.6-1.2 mm, elliptic. Capsules c. 4 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm, violet-blue.
