Characteristics

Leaves: cauline where present alternate, 12–50 x 1.5–9 mm., lanceolate-elliptic to narrowly oblong, obtuse, narrowed into petiole-like base, serrate-dentate to subentire, finely papillose; basal 40–90 mm. long, 8–12(20) mm. wide, similar to cauline.

Corolla yellow or buff to orange; tube 5.5–7(9.5) mm. long, slender, gibbous above, glandular-pubescent; lobes 1.8–2.5 x 1–1.5 mm., spreading, margins not recurving on drying, subequal, oblong.
Annual or biennial herb up to 65 cm. tall, erect, simple or branched usually from or towards base, minutely, somewhat densely white papillose; branches terete, rarely subtetragonous.
Anterior stamens inserted in mouth of corolla, anthers small, sterile 0.23–3 mm. long, partly extruded, anthers of posterior fertile pair 1–1.25 mm. long.
Calyx 2–4 mm. long, deeply 5-lobed mostly almost to base; lobes 2.1–3.8 x 0.4–0.5 mm., glandular-pubescent to subglabrous, linear to linear-lanceolate.
Bracts 1.5–2.5(3.8) mm. long, 0.3–0.5 mm. wide, linear to linear-lanceolate, obtuse.
Capsule 3–3.6 x 1.5–2.5 mm., oblong in outline, laterally somewhat compressed.
Inflorescence usually subcapitate, at first becoming thyrsoid to paniculate.
