Characteristics

Annual herb, stems several tufted from base, c. 100-200 mm long, simple, erect, glandular-puberulous, sometimes a very few balloon-tipped hairs as well, up to 0.25 mm long, leafless. Leaves opposite and decussate, bases connate, crowded at base and appearing rosulate, blade up to 12-30 x 3.5-12 mm, elliptic tapering into a flat petiolar part up to 5-25 mm long (very roughly half length to equalling length of blade), margins coarsely and irregularly toothed, both surfaces minutely glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in simple terminal racemes, crowded at first, distant in fruit. Bracts (lowermost) c. 1.5-4 x 0.2-0.4 mm, shorter upwards, linear-lanceolate, glandular-puberulous. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 3-6 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube c. 0.4-0.5 mm long, anticous lobes 2.5-3 x 0.8 mm, posticous ones slightly smaller, oblong-lanceolate, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to c. 0.1-0.15 mm long, occasional balloon-tipped hairs up to 0.25 mm long on backs and margins. Corolla tube c. 4 x 2 mm in throat, ± funnel-shaped, limb c. 7 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 2 x 2 mm, anticous lobe c. 2.5-2.7 x 1.8-2 mm, all suborbicular to broadly elliptic, obtuse, white, yellow patch down back of tube, tube minutely glandular-puberulous, sessile glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs fanning out right round throat and onto bases of all 5 lobes. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.7 mm long, shortly exserted, posticous anthers 0.8 mm long, visible in mouth, all filaments glabrous. Stigma c. 1.7 mm long. Style c. 2.8 mm. Ovary 1.3 x 1 mm, subrotund. Capsules c. 4 x 2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.7 x 0.4 (young), bright violet.
