Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 1-15 from the base, c. 30-150 mm long, erect or decumbent, simple or with a pair of branches near the base, sometimes branching at base of inflorescence, puberulous, hairs up to 0.1 mm long, mainly gland-tipped, balloon-tipped hairs also present mainly on inflorescence axis, either leafless or with a pair of leaves at each forking. Leaves opposite, bases connate, mostly crowded near base, blade c. 11-30 x 4.5-15 mm, elliptic to oblanceolate tapering to a petiolar part c. 5-17 mm long, roughly 1/2-3/4 length of blade, apex obtuse, margins subentire to serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.4 mm long, an occasional balloon-tipped hair also present. Flowers many in terminal racemes, sometimes weakly paniculate, individual flowers commonly solitary, sometimes in 2(-3)-flowered cymules. Bracts (lowermost) c. 2.5-10 x 0.4-1 mm, linear-lanceolate, or sometimes leaflike and up to c. 13-25 x 2-3.5 mm. Pedicels (lowermost) 3.5-9(-13) mm long, slightly shorter upwards. Calyx very obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.2-0.4 mm long, lobes 2.3-3.8 x 0.3-0.6 mm, lanceolate-oblong, tips sometimes subspathulate, glandular-pubescent mainly on margins, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long, balloon-tipped hairs wanting or very few, sessile glistening glands also present. Corolla tube 3-4.5 x 0.7-1.2 mm in throat, cylindric, expanded in upper half, limb almost regular, 5.5-7 mm across lateral lobes, lobes 2-3 x 1.6-3.5 mm, deltoid in outline, apex usually bilobed, frequently each lobe lobed again, occasionally apex merely retuse, white with a yellow/orange star-shaped patch around mouth and extending into throat, minutely puberulous outside, inside a posticous longitudinal band of clavate hairs and a transverse band in throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.25 mm long, posticous anthers 0.6 mm long, all included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 0.75-1.5 mm long, deeply included. Style 0.25-0.4 mm long, much shorter than stigma. Ovary 0.75-1 x 0.6-0.8 mm. Capsules c. 2.5-3 x 1.5-2 mm. Seeds c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm, blue-violet or pallid.
