Characteristics

Perennial herb, hoary, caespitose, stock woody, up to 15 mm in diam. at crown and there producing many dwarf leafy branchlets, flowering stems many, simple, scapose, up to c. 60-130 mm long, erect or decumbent, puberulous, hairs up to 0.2-0.4 mm long, balloon-tipped, smaller glandular hairs also present. Leaves opposite, bases connate, crowded at the base of the branchlets, c. 10-35 x 2.5-6 mm, elliptic tapering to a flat petiolar part accounting for 1/2-2/3 the total leaf length, apex of blade ± acute, margin obscurely to distinctly toothed, both surfaces puberulous, hairs as on stem. Flowers few to many in short terminal racemes always opposite, usually solitary in each bract-axil, rarely lowermost in 3-flowered dichasial cymules. Bracts (lowermost) c. 2-5 x 0.8-1.75 mm, lanceolate. Pedicels (lowermost) 1.5-13 mm, shorter upwards. Calyx bilabiate, tube c. 1.5-2 mm long, anticous lobes c. 2.5-4 x 1-1.5 mm, posticous lobes c. 2.5-4 x 0.8-1.2 mm, lanceolate, puberulous all over, hairs up to 0.3-0.4 mm long, balloon-tipped, tiny glandular hairs also present. Corolla tube c. 5.5-7 x 1.2-1.4 mm in throat, cylindric, inflated in upper part, limb bilabiate, c. 6-7.2 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 2.75-3.2 x 1.5-1.8 mm, anticous lobe 2.8-3.5 x 1.4-1.8 mm, all lobes oblong, margins revolute, yellow, dark reddish patch in back of throat, puberulous outside, hairs balloon-tipped, inside back of throat pubescent with clavate hairs. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long, tips just visible in mouth, posticous anthers 1.1-1.3 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 2.4-3.8 mm long, included. Style 0.4-0.5 mm long. Ovary 1.1-1.25 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules c. 5-6 x 2.5 mm. Seeds not seen.
