Manulea linearifolia Hilliard

Coarse herb, probably perennial, stems possibly several from the base or branching there, up to c. 1 m (?) tall, at least 4 mm diam. near base, laxly branched above into a loosely paniculate inflorescence, glabrous, leafy. Leaves alternate or sometimes opposite, ± appressed, distant, up to c. 12-22 x 1-1.5 mm (much smaller on the inflorescence branches), linear, apex subacute, base scarcely narrowed, margins entire or rarely with a single tooth, thick-textured, the midvein probably impressed above, glabrous. Flowers many in narrow, crowded thyrses paniculately arranged, the compound inflorescence sometimes ± twiggy, cymules up to 5-flowered, lowermost flowers often solitary and distant. Bracts (lowermost) c. 4-8 x 0.5-1 mm, leaf-like. Peduncles (lowermost) c. 2-4 mm long, pedicels short. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, lobes sub-equal, 2.7-4.5 x 0.6-0.7 mm, linear-lanceolate or upper half subspathulate, minutely glandular-puberulous all over, together with coarser glandular hairs to c. 0.3 mm on backs, the large basal cell persisting as a scabrid projection, eglandular hairs to 0.3-0.4 mm on margins. Corolla tube 7-9 x 1.3-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, upper half abruptly expanded, limb almost regular, 6.6-9 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-3.5 x 2-21.6 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-3.5 x 2.5-3.5 mm, all lobes suborbicular, orange, outside of lobes and tube pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, somewhat retrorse, upper surface of lobes with tiny white clavate hairs forming a stellate pattern, inside of tube glabrous in upper half, minutely glandular-puberulous below insertion of posticous filaments. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long, included, posticous anthers 1.2-1.6 mm long, deeply included, posticous filaments bearded with clavate hairs. Stigma 0.6-1.7 mm long, often bifid, deeply included. Style 0.5-1.7 mm long. Ovary 1.3-1.4 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules c. 2-4 x 1.75-3 mm. Seeds not seen.
