Characteristics

Perennial herb, taproot becoming stout, woody, up to c. 7 mm diam. at crown, stems 270-455 mm tall, erect, several tufted from the crown, either simple or the inflorescence sparingly branched, puberulous in lower part, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm long, gland-tipped, glabrous above, leafy only near base, scapose above. Leaves opposite, bases connate, c. 14-70 x 2-6 mm, narrowly elliptic or oblanceolate, apex ± acute, base narrowed to a petiolar part, margins sharply serrate, both surfaces puberulous, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm long, both gland-tipped and balloon-tipped. Flowers many in a lax very narrow terminal thyrse, inflorescence sometimes branched and then paniculate, lowermost flowers occasionally solitary, mostly in 3-5-flowered dichasial cymules. Bracts (subtending lowermost peduncle or pedicel) c. 1.5-3 x 0.5-1 mm, oblong. Peduncles or pedicel (lowermost) c. 1-2 mm long, flowers otherwise sessile or nearly so. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.3-0.5 mm long, lobes 1.4-1.8 x 0.4-0.6 mm long, subspathulate, tips somewhat thickened, margins minutely glandular-puberulous, very occasional small balloon-tipped hairs also present on backs of lobes. Corolla tube 7.5-9 x 0.8-1.1 mm in throat, cylindric, inflated near apex, limb bilabiate, c. 7 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 3.1-4 x 1.1-1.4 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-3.2 x 0.9-1 mm, all narrowly elliptic, margins revolute, brown, pubescent outside on backs of lobes and tube, hairs sometimes scanty or wanting on anticous side of tube, glabrous inside or a very few clavate hairs at back of throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.4-0.5 mm long, just included, posticous anthers 0.8-1 mm long, included, posticous filaments weakly bearded. Stigma 0.6-1 mm long, much shorter than style. Style 2-2.5 mm long. Ovary 1.2-1.5 x 0.5-0.7 mm, conical. Capsules c. 4-5 x 2 mm. Seeds unknown.
