Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Manulea

Characteristics

Herb, probably perennial, taproot woody, up to c. 10 mm diam. at crown, stems up to c. 300-700 mm tall, up to c. 3 mm diam, eventually woody, several from the crown, occasionally simple, mostly laxly branched throughout, branches ascending at angle of c. 45°, initially glandular-pubescent, with coarse hairs up to 0.2-1 mm long, glabrescent, but basal cells of larger hairs persisting as ± scabrid projections, much smaller glandular hairs also present, leafy throughout. Leaves possibly opposite with connate bases very low down on stem but soon alternate, often with dwarf axillary shoots, crowded on lower part, often distant upwards and passing into inflorescence bracts, main leaves c. 15-55 x 3-10(-18) mm, oblanceolate, apex ± acute, base distinctly narrowed and decurrent in two very narrow ridges, margins pinnatifid to pinnatipar-tite with up to c. 9 pairs of somewhat falcate teeth of uneven size, the larger ones themselves sometimes toothed, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs as on stem. Flowers in a long lax terminal raceme, often solitary, sometimes in 2-3-flowered dichasial cymules, often ± panicled through branching of the upper part of the stem. Bracts (lowermost) c. 4.5-15 x 0.6-5 mm, sometimes ± leaflike, or the lowermost flowers in the axils of the uppermost leaves. Pedicels or peduncles (lowermost) c. 2-10(-25)mm long. Calyx very obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.1-0.4 mm long, anticous lobes 2.6-4.5 x 0.5-0.7 mm, posticous lobes slightly narrower, all lanceolate, minutely glandular-puberulous all over with some stouter hairs on the backs, the bases of these persisting as scabrid projections, margins with eglandular hairs up to 0.4 mm long. Corolla tube (5.5-)7.5-8.5 x 1.2-1.5 mm in throat, cylindric, upper half abruptly expanded, limb almost regular, 5.5-7.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.5-3 x 1.2-2.75 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-3 x 1.6-2.6 mm, all lobes broadly elliptic to subrotund, margins often somewhat revolute, dull yellow to deep orange-yellow, orange-brown or reddish, outside of lobes and tube pubescent with somewhat retrorse hairs up to 0.1-0.5 mm, minutely glandular as well, upper surface of lobes with tiny white clavate hairs forming a star-shaped pattern, inside of tube glabrous in upper half, minutely glandular-puberulous below point of insertion of posticous filaments. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.5-0.75 mm long, included, posticous anthers 1-1.4 mm long, very deeply included, posticous filaments bearded with clavate hairs. Stigma 0.5-1.75 mm long, often ± bifid, deeply included. Style 0.3-1.1 mm long. Ovary c. 1-1.5 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules c. 3.5-5 x 2.5-3.5 mm. Seeds c. 1 x 0.5 mm, pallid. Both flowering and fruiting specimens have been collected between June and January.
