Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 30-210 mm tall, few to many tufted from the base, in small discrete groups crowded together, mostly simple, sometimes with 1 or 2 short branches very low down, glandular-puberulous, nude or with a few greatly reduced leaves near base. Leaves all radical or very nearly so, opposite and decussate, bases connate, blade 7-55 x 4-20 mm, oblanceolate to elliptic tapering to a petiolar part c. 5-20 mm long (roughly 1/2-1/3 length of blade), margins entire, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers many in simple terminal racemes, crowded at first, distant in fruit. Bracts (lowermost) 1.5-4(-10) x 1-4 mm, mostly ovate, acute. Pedicels (lowermost) 7-23 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.1-1 mm long, anticous lobes 4.6-8.5 x 1-3 mm, anticous lip split 2.25-5 mm, posticous lobes 4.4-8.5 x 1-2.5 mm, posticous lip split 2-4.75 mm, lobes all lanceolate, subacute, flat, glandular-puberulous all over, hairs to c. 0.2-0.5 mm long. Corolla tube 8-13 x 1.2-2 mm in throat, cylindric, expanded in upper third, limb 14-20 mm in diam., nearly regular, lobes 4.5-7.5 x 4-5 mm in upper part, broadly obovate to subrotund with a broad claw, reflexed, white to blue (opening white and turning mauve-blue or vice versa), yellow round mouth and in throat, tube densely puberulous all over outside, hairs 0.1-0.4 mm, both glandular and eglandular, ± sessile glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside a longitudinal posticous band of clavate hairs (some dark-coloured), a transverse anticous band in throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.5-1 mm long, tips just visible in mouth, posticous anthers 1.8-2.2 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 6-10 mm long, shortly exserted or just included. Style 0.5-2 mm long. Ovary 2-3 x 1-1.5 mm. Capsules 4-6.5 x 2.5-4 mm. Seeds c. 0.75 x 0.5 mm, pallid or violet-blue (only when young?).
