Characteristics

Herb, either annual or a short-lived perennial, taproot becoming woody and up to 15 mm in diam. at crown, stems c. 150-600(-900) mm tall, erect, solitary to several from the crown, simple to laxly branched, pubescent at base, hairs there often entirely gland-tipped, up to 0.3-0.5 mm long, mixed with balloon-tipped hairs upwards, upper stem and inflorescence axis either glabrous or with scattered balloon-tipped hairs, leafy throughout but in small plants leaves crowded at base. Leaves opposite, bases connate, c. 17-90 x 7-25 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic, apex subacute to obtuse, base narrowed to a short petiolar part, margins serrate to crenate, sometimes ± tabulate, both surfaces pubescent with gland-tipped and balloon-tipped hairs up to 0.25-0.5 mm long, balloon-tipped hairs particularly common on lower surface. Flowers many in long (up to c. 300 mm) terminal thyrses, the axis occasionally branched, cymules dichasial, many-flowered. Bracts (lowermost) c. 4-15 x 0.5-3 mm, usually elliptic-oblong, rarely leaf-like. Peduncles (lowermost) c. 3-14 mm long, all flowers sessile or nearly so. Calyx very obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.1-0.4 mm long, lobes subequal, 1.5-2.5 x 0.4-0.6 mm, spathulate, thick, rounded on backs, hairs on margins only, up to 0.2-0.25 mm long, balloon-tipped, tiny glandular hairs also present. Corolla tube 4.5-5.75(-7.5-8) x 0.75-1(-1.2) mm in throat, cylindric, inflated in upper part, limb bilabiate, 4.8-6(-7-8) mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.6-2.75(-3-3.8) x 1-1.5(-2-2.5) mm, anticous lobe 1.6-2.5(-3-4) x 0.75-1.8(-2) mm, all lobes elliptic, margins revolute, pale yellow to orange, later brownish, yellow/orange patch in back of throat, backs of lobes and inflated part of tube puberulous, hairs balloon-tipped (hairy all over; see discussion below), sometimes extending in a band down back of tube, inside with 4 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs in throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.25-0.5 mm long, tips just visible in throat, posticous anthers 0.6-lmm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 0.8-1.5(-1.8) mm long, about equalling or slightly longer than style, included. Style 0.7-1.25(-1.8-2) mm long. Ovary 0.75-1.3(-1.5-1.8) x 0.5-0.75 mm. Capsules c. 2.5-4 x 1.5-2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.6-0.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm, pallid.
