Characteristics

Shrubby, stems to at least 1 m long (only upper parts seen), woody below and there up to 4 mm in diam., herbaceous above, laxly well branched, probably sprawling or even scandent (upper part of branches often flexuous), densely pubescent, hairs up to 0.4-0.8 mm long, both acute and gland-tipped, leafy throughout. Leaves opposite, bases connate, becoming alternate upwards and passing imperceptibly into floral bracts, blade c. 8-26 x 5-19 mm, ovate, apex ± acute to obtuse, base cuneate and passing into a petiolar part c. 2.5-10 mm long (roughly 1/3 length of blade), margins coarsely and irregularly lobed and toothed, both surfaces pubescent, hairs up to 0.4-0.6 mm long, mixed acute and gland-tipped. Flowers many in long lax somewhat flexuous terminal thyrses, cymules 3-9-flowered, dichasial. Bracts (lowermost) leaflike, c. 9-25 x 5-14 mm including short petiole, rapidly smaller upwards. Peduncles (lowermost) c. 2-20 mm long, rapidly shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.2-0.5 mm long, anticous lobes c. 2.1-3.2 x 0.4-0.6 mm, posticous ones slightly narrower, lanceolate, pubescent all over, hairs up to 0.4-0.5 mm long, acute, small glandular hairs also present. Corolla tube 5.5-7 mm long, cylindric, inflated at apex, limb distinctly bilabiate, 7-10 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 3.1-5 x 0.8-1 mm, anticous lobe c. 3.2-5 x 0.6-1 mm, all lanceolate, subulate, margins revolute, colour not stated but certainly orange or yellow turning brownish, orange patch in back of throat, pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.2 mm long, inside 4 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs in throat. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.4-0.5 mm long, tips visible in mouth, posticous anthers 0.7-0.8 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma c. 1.5 mm long, longer than style, included. Style c. 0.5-1.2 mm long. Ovary 1-1.25 x 0.6-0.8 mm. Capsules c. 3.5 x 2 mm, glandular-pubescent. Seeds not seen.
