Evergreen and semi-evergreen rain-forest, riverine forest, mostly on dry land; rare in the wettest types of forest, and absent only from the dryer types; at elevations from sea level to 1,900 metres.

A tropical plant. It grows in evergreen and deciduous forests in West Africa. It can be in seasonally flooded forests. In Nigeria it has been recorded at 750 and 1,440 m above sea level.
