Characteristics

Erect/upright multi-stemmed shrub to 1.6 m high, by 0.15–1 m wide; new shoots with a combination of hair types: short based glandular, and pilose, or longer base hairs with an elongated top cell; becoming glabrous. Leaves: adult leaves alternate, elliptic to oblong , 7–22 mm long, 3–7 (9) mm wide; bases attenuate; petiolate (1–2.5 mm long); margins flat with a light sprinkling of both hair types in younger leaves only; yellow green usually with a reddish border; margins softly hairy. Inflorescences axillary, solitary, irregular flowers with parts in fives; peduncles 3–12 (19) mm, +/-nodding; dense covering of mainly glandular hairs. Sepals 3–7 mm long, dark blue, acute, hairy; petals cohering at the base and then recurving, spathulate  11–19.5 mm long very pale blue with fine purple striations, darkening with age; pilose over the central upper surface. Stamens free, filaments flared towards the base; anthers white, dorsifixed, shorter than filaments. Pistil with basal nectary, glabrous stipe, the bilocular ovary hairy, particularly towards the base, style similar length to ovary, curving or straight. Fruit dehiscent capsules, obloid to ellipsoid, 7.5–12 mm long, 6–8 mm wide., sparsely hairy; seeds broadly elliptic to reniform, shiny, red brown, wrinkled with a small aril.
