Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Marianthus

Characteristics

Woody shrubs, very scandent in later development stages, glabrous; new stems red-purple, older stems with corky lenticels. Seedling leaves immediately alternate, initially trilobed then rapidly ovate with double dentate margins, without hairs. Adult development stages with leaves shortly petiolate, with lamina narrowly elliptic, 26–45 mm long, 5–12 mm wide, thick, blue-green with a waxy bloom on both surfaces. Inflorescences much-branched corymbs with numerous irregular flowers; rachis to 10 mm long; peduncles 15–20 mm long, mottled purple, ridged, bracts caducous, buds mustard yellow. Sepals ovate, to 1.5 mm long, and 1 mm wide, basally thickened, crenulate. Petals very narrow spathulate, 10–14 mm long, to 3.5 mm wide, spreading from the base, outer surface yellow, inner surface cream becoming yellower with prominent maroon or purple striations with age/sex phase change. Stamens free, clustering by height opposite petal break and then curling out of the way of the developing stigma; filaments white with a thick median groove, flaring towards the base; anthers ovoid, white; pollen yellow. Pistil: ovary shortly stipitate, maroon, curving style eventually the same length as ovary; stigma obsolete, bilobed. Fruit loculicidally and just septicidally dehiscent capsules, 14–18 mm long, c. 8 mm diam., thick, flexible walls, prominent septal depression, purple, eventually dark brown. Seeds intermeshed in one row, discoidal, minutely pitted, margins distinctly ridged, almost winged.
