Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Marianthus

Characteristics

Habit: woody shrubs, climbing in later developmental stages to considerable lengths, glabrous. Leaves: seedling leaves initially irregularly lobed, laciniate, then double dentate, becoming entire as overall shape changes to elliptic, 40–50 mm long, 20–22 wide. Adult leaves alternate, narrow elliptic, 45–70 mm long, 5–11 mm wide; petioles to 10 mm long, margins entire, flat. Inflorescences are corymbs of 3–6 down curving, tubular, irregular flowers with parts in fives; rachis to 30 mm long; peduncles 12–15 mm long, nodding. Sepals 2–3 mm long, unequal, basally thickened, green-red, darkening with age, caducous; petal tube 15–26 mm long, apices laxly recurving; petals red darkening to maroon with age. Stamens free, exserted and clustering at different heights; filaments prominently flared towards the base; anthers much smaller than filaments, white, oblong with a deep sinus, becoming pink with age; pollen fawny pink. Pistil with a stipitate ovary, glabrous, lime green; style almost twice length of ovary, minimal stigmatic development. Fruits are loculicidally and barely septicidally  dehiscent capsules,10–12 mm long, stalked, spindle shaped. Seeds intermeshed into one row per loculus, angular, ridged, minutely pitted, striate. Flowering August to December. Probably bird and insect pollinated.
