Characteristics

Liane, rarely a small tree to 7 m high. Leaves generally verticillate, ovate to obovate, 3-veined, glabrous; lamina c. 7–14 cm long and 4–7 cm wide; narrowly elliptic-lanceolate and 1-veined on juvenile plants. Inflorescence axillary or cauline, umbellate, usually 4-flowered. Flowers 5-merous. Hypanthium ovoid to somewhat triangular, c. 8–10 mm long and 6–8 mm diam. Calyx lobes reduced to 5 small teeth. Petals white to pale pink. Stamens 10, anisomorphic; anthers curved, generally 12 mm long in larger stamens and 6 mm long in smaller stamens, narrowly to shortly rostrate; connective prolongation very short, with a filiform dorsal appendage and a bilobed ventral appendage. Ovary 5-locular, glabrous. Fruit globose at maturity, to 15 mm diam., pale pink becoming purple.
