Characteristics

Shrubby herb or shrub to 1(-1.5) m tall, sometimes scrambling; young branches and petioles pubescent or densely so, hairs usually curved down towards end, more rarely straight. Leaves pubescent or sparsely so, densest along veins and lamina often glabrous; petiole (3-)5-13 mm long; lamina narrowly ovate to ovate or elliptic, largest (4.5-)5.5-9.5(-11) x 1.5-3.8 (-4.5) cm, 1/b-ratio 2.3-3.9; apex acuminate to acute, apiculate; base attenuate, decurrent on petiole. Spikes 1.5-5.5(-8) cm long; peduncle 1-5 mm long, pubescent; axes pubescent (hairs spreading and curved down towards tip) or with intermixed non-capitate glands towards apex, rarely also stalked capitate glands. Bracts pale green or green, sometimes purplish tinged towards apex, ovate or elliptic; lower 10-19 x 6-13 mm, acumen 1-3 mm long, sharp, recurved; upper subglabrous to sparsely puberulous and with subsessile or short-stalked capitate glands (rarely without), usually conspicuously ciliate along edges and central vein with long glossy hairs, veins as in M. revoluta; bracteoles 3-5 mm long. Calyx (5-)6-8 mm long, glabrous to sparsely puberulous, ± stalked capitate glands; lobes conspicuously ciliate with long non-glandular hairs, sometimes also with stalked capitate glands and short non-capitate glands. Corolla pale blue to bright blue; tube 10-13 mm long; lobes 13-18 mm long, middle in lower lip 2.5-4 mm wide; filaments 7-10 mm long. Capsule 9-13 mm long, sparsely puberulous along sutures and on outer part of valves, otherwise glabrous; seed 4.5-5.5 x 3.5-4 mm, greyish, rugose or slightly so, with glandular-glochidiate hairs.
