Graceful shrub or small tree 0.5–9 m tall with furrowed grey bark which peels from lower part of trunk; branches pendulous; characteristic white lines on shoots from which leaves originate.. Leaves spirally arranged, needle-like, 0.9–2.8(–3.5) cm long.. Flowers white in cylindrical spikes 2.5–6.5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide.. Staminal claw 4–8 mm long with 10–20 white or rarely mauve filaments.
