Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, 1.5-2.5 m high. Leaves linear to elliptic; oil glands and venation prominent. Flowers in cylindrical spikes, axis downy, at first terminal but axis soon growing out into leafy shoot; hypanthium ovoid. Sepals 5. Petals 5, usually red. Stamens many, much longer than petals, in 2 or more series, rarely united in short ring at base, red. Style simple, up to 23 mm long. Fruit a cup-shaped, woody capsule, usually remaining on stem for several years. Seeds very small, many.
