Leaves spirally arranged, oblanceolate or narrowly oblong-elliptic (more broadly elliptic in one variety) 0.9–2.7 cm long, 4.5–9(–13) mm wide, acute, the venation rather obscure, gland-dotted beneath.. Inflorescences lateral many-flowered spikes 2.3–4.7 cm long, up to 4 cm wide, the flower buds subtended by lanceolate acuminate bracts 8–10 mm long which soon fall.. Petals 4–5 mm long.. Stamen claws yellow, 0.8–1.7 cm long with 20–34 crimson-tipped filaments.
