Characteristics

Annual herb, stem c. 40-270 mm tall, 1-1.5 mm diam. at base, simple or branching above, erect, leafy, glandular-hairy, hairs patent, up to 0.25-1 mm long. Leaves opposite, occasionally alternate immediately below the inflorescences, blade 4-16 x 2.5-13 mm, ovate-elliptic, base tapering to a flat petiolar part 1-11 mm long, roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the blade, upper margins finely to coarsely serrate with 3-6 pairs of teeth, thinly glandular-hairy especially on lower surface and margins, hairs up to 0.5-1.25 mm long. Flowers up to c. 15 in very lax racemes terminating each branchlet. Bracts at base of raceme c. 2.5-12 x 0.5-4.5 mm, smaller upwards, more or less leaf-like (with 1 or 2 teeth) to spathulate, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate and then entire, adnate to pedicel and extreme base of calyx, glandular-hairy, hairs up to 0.6 mm long. Pedicels up to 1 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, tube 0.6-1.1 mm long, anticous lobes 1.6-2.5 x 0.7-0.8 mm, anticous lip split 1-2.25 mm, posticous lobes narrower, whole calyx glandular-hairy, hairs up to c. 0.4 mm long. Corolla tube c. 2.6-3.5 x 0.6-0.8 mm, broadening a little in the throat, limb c. 2-3.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.5-1.25 x 0.5-0.75 mm, anticous lobe 0.75-1.5 x 0.5-0.9 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white or mauve with an orange patch at base of posticous lip and there either glabrous or thinly bearded, hairs extending down back of tube. Stamens 4, anthers 0.3-0.5 mm long, all exserted. Stigma exserted. Capsules 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm Seeds c. 0.3-0.6 x 0.3-0.5 mm.
