Characteristics

Evergreen shrub or tree up to 8 m. high.. Leaf-lamina ovate, ovate-oblong or cordate-oblong, 9–1 8 cm. long, 3–7 cm. wide, obtusely acuminate, base rounded to subcordate, with the midrib impressed above, prominent beneath, and 18–24 transverse nerves faintly discernible on both surfaces, minutely papillose on both surfaces, glossy above; petiole 2–4 mm. long.. Inflorescences sessile, ± 20–40-flowered clusters on old wood; pedicels 1.5–3 mm. long.. Calyx obconical, ± 1.5 mm. long, 1.3 mm. in diameter; lobes deltoid ± 0.5 mm. long.. Petals subcircular, ± 1 mm. long, ± 1 mm. wide, pink to scarlet.. Stamens not seen.. Fruit subglobose, ± 10 mm. in diameter, red becoming black when mature.

Flowers in fascicles of 20–40 at the nodes of leafless old branches (fide Gilg); pedicels 2–3 mm. long.
Fruit c. 10 mm. in diameter, subglobose, black at maturity (red when immature).
Branchlets terete, brownish; nodes rather thickened.
Receptacle saucer-shaped, shallowly 4-lobed.
