Leaf-lamina 2·3–8·5(11·5) x 1–5(6·5) cm., obovate-cuneate, rarely obovate-oblong or elliptic, roundish, truncate or emarginate (rarely subacute) at the apex, coriaceous, subconcolorous (yellowish-green, turning deep-yellow or brown-yellow on drying, but bluish-black or glaucous in the young leaves), dull on both faces or somewhat shining above, with 1 longitudinal nerve prominent below and the transverse nerves very oblique, slightly raised beneath, sometimes also above, frequently inconspicuous on both faces; petiole ± absent or up to 4 mm. long, stout.
Cymes up to 12 mm. long, many-flowered, mainly on the upper leafless part of the branches, solitary or in fascicles, sessile or with peduncle up to 8 mm. long; pedicels 2–6 mm. long, deep red-purple.
Stem with grey-brown or dark-grey, deeply fissured bark, breaking off in flakes; young shoots 4-gonous, grey-green or whitish-grey; nodes thickened.
Fruit ovoid-ellipsoid, 12–14 x 6–8 mm., or subglobose and up to 15 mm. in diam., at first green or pale yellow, turning blue-black at maturity.
Receptacle 1–2 mm. high, hemispherical, contracted above the base, with the limb 2·5–3 mm. in diam., saucer-shaped, sublobulate, green.
Filaments 4–5 mm. long, white or pale violet; anthers pale to bright blue before dehiscing, with a red gland on the back.
Petals 4 x 3·5 mm., subdeltate, acuminate, very acute, white, sweet-scented.
Flower-buds c. 5 x 3 mm., conical and very pointed at the top.
A much-branched tree up to 7·5 m. or a shrub up to 5 m.
