Characteristics

Small tree to 15 m high. Leaves ovate to somewhat broadly ovate, with lateral and intramarginal veins present but relatively indistinct; lamina c. 7–12 cm long and 3.5–6 cm wide. Inflorescence cymose, relatively robust, often many-flowered (usually 6–15-flowered), primary peduncle 5–14 mm long, glabrous. Hypanthium turbinate to hemispherical, c. 2 mm long and 2 mm diam. Calyx lobes reduced to indistinct teeth or absent. Petals white or blue. Stamens: anthers dolabriform, with a wide and bilobed dorsal appendage and a distinct dorsal gland. Fruit globose or depressed globose, to 6 mm long and 7 mm diam., with a wide and distinct corona, green becoming purple.
