Rhizomatous perennial, 3–10 dm, glabrous or subglabrous (often glandular), the lvs often hirsute along the main veins beneath; lvs sessile or subsessile, lance-ovate or elliptic, 3–7 × 0.8–2.5 cm, 2–3.5 times as long as wide, serrate, ± acute; fls crowded into slender terminal spikes (sometimes interrupted below) 3–12 cm long and 0.5–1 cm thick at anthesis; cal 1–3 mm, the lobes generally hispid-ciliate, the tube without hairs; cor 2–4 mm; 2n=48. Banks of streams and ditches, and other moist places; native of Europe, now widely established in N. Amer. and throughout our range.
Herbs stoloniferous. Stems erect, 40-130 cm, glabrous or subglabrous, striate. Leaves sessile or subsessile, ovate-oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 3-7 × 1-2 cm, base broadly cuneate to rounded, margin irregularly serrate, apex acute. Verticillasters in cylindric terminal spikes 4-10 cm, spikes interrupted at base; bracteoles linear, 5-8 mm. Pedicel ca. 2 mm. Calyx campanulate, ca. 2 mm, glandular, obscurely 5-veined; teeth triangular-lanceolate, ca. 1 mm. Corolla purplish, ca. 4 mm, glabrous, tube ca. 2 mm; lobes subequal, apex emarginate. Ovary brown, glabrous. Fl. Jul-Sep.
A creeping leafy herb with numerous long runners. It has underground stems. It grows to 50 cm high. The leaves have a strong smell. The plant tends to be stiff and upright with long narrow pointed leaves. The leaves have short stalks. The leaves are 2-3.5 cm long by 1.5-2.5 cm wide. They have teeth long the edge. It has pink flowers at the top. They occur in a ring of many flowers. and small brown seeds.
