Species

Angiosperms > Solanales > Convolvulaceae > Merremia

Characteristics

Stems twining, slender, terete, striate, patently hirsute with yellowish hairs, the adult parts woody, glabrescent and warted. Leaves palmately divided nearly to the base, with 5-7 lanceolate, mucronu-late, coarsely dentate to irregularly pinnately lobed segments, glabrous or hairy on the veins beneath, the middle segment 2½-10 by ½-3 cm, the lateral ones smaller; petiole 2½-7 cm, patently hirsute like the stems. Peduncles axillary, one-to few-flowered, 5-10 cm long, patently hirsute, glabrescent in the upper portion. Pedicels 1½-2 cm long, thickened towards the calyx, glabrous, minutely verrucose at the apex. Flower-buds narrow-ovoid, acute. Sepals subequal, 2-2½ cm long, ovate-lanceolate, acute, mucronulate, glabrous, herbaceous with narrow scarious margin, enlarged and coriaceous in fruit. Corolla funnel-shaped, 3—3½ cm long, white with a rose-purple throat; the limb with 5 distinct bands. Anthers spirally twisted. Ovary glabrous, 2-celled. Capsule globose, glabrous, 2-celled, 4-valved. Seeds normally 4, glabrous, black.
More
Twiners, semi-woody; axial parts ± yellowish spreading hirsute. Stems woody basally, tuberculate, glabrescent, herbaceous when young. Petiole 2.5-7 cm; leaf blade palmately 5-7-divided nearly to base; segments lanceolate, middle 2.5-10 X 0.5-3 cm, lateral ones smaller, glabrous or pubescent along veins abaxially, margin coarsely dentate to irregularly pinnately lobed, apex mucronulate. Inflorescences 1-to several flowered; peduncle 5-10 cm. Pedicel 1.5-2 cm, thicker distally, minutely tuberculate, glabrous. Sepals ovate-lanceolate, subequal, 2-2.5 cm, enlarged and leathery in fruit, glabrous, margin narrowly scarious, apex acute, mucronulate. Corolla white, with purple-red throat, funnelform, midpetaline bands distinct. Anthers spirally twisted. Ovary glabrous. Capsule globose, glabrous, 2-loculed. Seeds black, glabrous. 2n = 30, 32.
Vines; stems herbaceous, sparsely hirsute to glabrous. Leaves palmately divided almost to the base, the 7-9 lobes sinuate to sinuate-dentate, usually gla-brous. Flowers usually solitary, occasionally in cymes; sepals oblong, 18-25 mm long, mucronate, glabrous; corollas white with a purple center, 3-4.5 cm long. Fruits capsular, depressed-globose, 1-2 cm in diameter, subtended and partially surrounded by the calyx; seeds black, glabrous.
A twining vine. The stems are hairy. The exudate from the plant is clear. The leaves are simple and have 5-7 lobes. The leaves are 3-15 cm long by 4-15 cm wide. A few flowers occur together in the axils of leaves. The flowers are 3-4 cm across. They are white or cream with a reddish-purple throat. The fruit is a brown or black capsule. It has 4 valves. The capsule is 1.2-1.8 cm long by 1.3-1.8 cm wide. There are 2-4 black seeds.
