Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Metalasia

Characteristics

Mostly sprawling, often much-branched shrublet, decumbent, slender, up to 0.3 m high. Branches ascending, young whitish-tomentose, older becoming glabrous or nearly so, with inconspicuous leaf-scars. Foliage often dense. Leaves declinate, straight, with axillary brachyblasts less than half as long as the subtending leaf, much to highly involute, sometimes slightly carinate, linear to very narrowly oblong to narrowly lanceolate, rarely acicular, 1.3-6.2 x 0.3-0.8 mm, acute, half-twisted to twisted about once, glabrous or sometimes sparsely pubescent, sometimes with an indistinct midvein at least towards the base. Synflorescenses 4-17 mm wide, very dense, head-like, broadly campanulate, usually seemingly unbranched, with (few)10-35 sometimes numerous capitula arranged in few to 5 unbranched and often not distinguishable clusters, each containing 5-10 capitula. Peduncles 0-4 mm long. Capitula 3-flowered, sessile, usually completely fused by hairs within clusters and synflorescenses, lower 1/2-2/3 of each capitulum hairy. Involucre narrowly cyathiform, apically 1.5-2 mm wide, often up to 3 mm wide at anthesis. Involucral bracts in 3-1(-5) series, slightly longer inwards, outermost about 2/3-4/5 as long as the innermost, outermost foliaceous with a scarious lamina, those inwards petaloid, outermost spathulate, those inwards narrowly ovate to oblanceolate with the non-hyaline part spathulate to oblanceolate, all except outermost with broad inwards narrowing hyaline margins, all rounded and obtuse, all apically erect and slightly concave but outer sometimes deeply concave, outermost often slightly apiculate and with interlocking hairs reaching above the middle of the bract, those inwards less hairy to glabrous, outermost reddish or sometimes pinkish, those inwards conspicuously reddish above the stereome but otherwise pink or rarely white, innermost with a stereome about 2.2-2.5 times as long as the lamina. Corolla narrowly cylindrical, 3.1-3.6 mm long, generally with a rigid resiniferous base; lobes erect. Anthers apically rounded to subtruncate. Cypselas (not fully ripe) narrowly oblong, 2.4 mm long, with a distinct annular ridge, inconspicuously and irregularly ridged, brown. Pappus bristles with a serrate or sometimes dentate and narrow to broad shaft, apically flattened or often flat and entire to slightly serrate or slightly dentate, acute or sometimes obtuse.
More
Slender, sprawling, white-woolly shrublet to 30 cm. Leaves reflexed, twisted, 1-6 mm long, with small axillary tufts. Flower heads discoid, several in completely interlocking, terminal clusters, 3-flowered, bracts erect, concave above, inner petaloid, pink sometimes white.
