Characteristics

Shrubs or lianas; stems robust. Leaves opposite, coriaceous, stiff, eglandular; petioles with or without glands; stipules minute, interpetiolar. Inflorescences cy-mose-paniculate; bracts small; peduncle articulate at the apex and forming umbels of 3 or 4; pedicels short; bracteoles 2 at the articulation, obovate-orbicular, larger than the flower, enveloping the flower bud before anthesis. Flowers with the sepals 5, oblong, obtuse, soon reflexed, glabrous inside, densely pubescent out-side, 4 sepals each with 2 concrescent glands; petals yellow, the limb obovate to suborbicular, the margins erose, the dorsal side villous-sericeous, the posterior petal smaller, ciliate and glandular; stamens 10, all fertile, slightly unequal, the filaments flat, glabrous, united at the base, the anthers obovoid, large, glabrous, the connective large, glandular; styles large, stiff, the apex somewhat enlarged, truncate with external angle raised and acute on 2 of the styles, the third shorter with apical angle rounded, the ovary villous. Fruit a schizocarp of 3 samaras; seminiferous area ovate-oblong; principal lateral wing suborbicular, continued at the base, membranous, large, the dorsal wing smaller, suborbicular; intermediate lateral wings semiorbicular-obovate, reduced on the posterior side; seeds oblong, acute; embryo straight; cotyledons subequal.
