Characteristics

Perennial shrub or small tree, 0.5-5.0 m high; dioecious or monoecious; sparingly branched. Leaves alternate, firmly membranous, lamina elliptic-lanceolate, base attenuate or cuneate, apex acutely acuminate, margins sharply glandular-serrate. Stipules minute, subulate, soon falling. Inflorescences racemose; flowers shortly pedicellate. Male inflorescence bracts triangular-ovate, 2-20-flowered. Male flowers buds subglobose, apiculate; calyx 3-lobed, suborbicular-ovate; stamens 20-30, filaments short. Bisexual inflorescences resembling male ones, but 1 or 2 more female flowers at base. Female inflorescences bracts narrowly lanceolate, 1-flowered; flowers remote. Female flowers calyx lobes 3, triangular-lanceolate, acute; disc glands 3, ligulate; ovary 3-lobed, smooth; styles 3, free; stigmas papillose. Flowering time July-Mar. Fruit a globose, 3-valved coccus, smooth. Seeds ovoid, shallowly and finely reticulate-rugulose.
