Microlejeunea africana Stephani

Species

Bryophytes > Porellales > Lejeuneaceae > Microlejeunea

Characteristics

Monoicous, pale yellowish green, on bark or epiphyllous. Stem to 12 mm long, 30-40 µ in diameter, sparsely branched, cortical cells rectangular, about 12 x 20 µ, walls rather thick, with a few small papillae, or smooth. Leaves distant-almost imbricate, suberect, dorsal lobe subsymmetrical, apex rounded-almost truncate, frequently somewhat recurved, covering the stem by a medial appendage. Lobule 1/2 as large as the lobe, inflated, with a thumb-like tooth, usually 2 cells long and curved towards the distal side, apical cell inflated, hyaline, median part of the free margin incurved. In leaves of sterile shoots, however, the lobule sometime is small, with a short apical tooth. Marginal cells of the lobe 10-16 µ, inner cells 14-18 µ, basal cells up to 12 x 39 µ walls thin-slightly thickened, trigones small. Oil bodies small, colourless. Amphigastria small, of the same width as the stem, bilobed to 1/2-1/3. Female organ apical, with one innovation. Female bracts large, apex truncate-obtuse, lobule as long as the lobe but 1/2 as wide, subacute, keel usually winged. Bracteole 2/3-3/4 as long, bilobed, lobes acute. Androecia terminal bracts in up to 10 pairs, dorsal lobe large, apex broad, truncate, reflexed, lobule inflated, with a thumb-like tooth. Antheridia single, 40 x 60 µ.
