Characteristics

A branching herbaceous twiner, stems thinly cobwebby, more or less glabrescent, becoming woody, leafy. Leaves up to c. 7 x 7 cm, rhomboid or deltoid-ovate in outline, bluntly 3-5-angled or shallowly lobed with broad rounded sinuses, lobes deltoid, mucronate, base broadly cuneate to subtruncate, lower surface often thinly woolly or cobwebby, glabrescent, thick-textured, digitately 3-nerved, petiole up to c. 5 cm long, prehensile, becoming woody in the lower part and forming a persistent hook after the leaf has fallen. Heads discoid, in small axillary corymbose panicles, shorter than the subtending leaf. Involucre narrowly campanulate, bracts 5-7, c. 5 mm long, equalling the cylindric part of the corolla tube, swollen at the base, nerves resinous, c'alyculus bracts few, small. Flowers creamy white or pale yellow, corolla lobes each with a median resinous line, style branches truncate, penicillate, tipped with a short cone. Achenes c. 2.5 mm long, broadly cylindric, ribbed, glabrous.
