Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, 0.6-2.0 m high; branches ± 4-angular. Leaves petiolate, elliptic, membranous; stipules green when dry, ovate acuminate. Flowers in small, axillary, bracteolate cymes. Calyx 5-lobed, lobes subulate; tube campanulate. Corolla white; lobes short, rounded, contorted towards right; tube elongate, funnel-shaped. Stamens 5, arising in broad part of corolla tube, ± included. Disc cushion-like. Ovary 2-locular, with several subpendulous ovules per locule; style filiform, glabrous; stigmatic club bifid at apex. Flowering time Aug.-Mar. Fruit globose, crowned by persistent calyx lobes. Seeds fleshy, testa ornamented with fine reticulations.

Leaves 3–17 × 1–9 cm, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or ± ovate, acute at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, subcoriaceous, glabrous; petiole (2)6–15 mm long; stipules 5–10 mm long, narrowly triangular, produced into a long acumen.
Corolla waxy-white, the lobes often pink-tinged; tube 12–17 mm long, c. 10 mm wide at the throat, funnel-shaped with a narrow cylindrical base, the lobes 0.7–1.3 × 5–7 mm.

Fruit bright orange when ripe, up to 1.5 × 1.3–1.5 cm, broadly ellipsoid to globose; stalk up to 8 mm long.
Seeds brown, 5 × 5 × 2 mm, compressed, ± round, reticulate-rugose.
Pollen presenter narrowly clavate, bilobed at the apex.
Flowers strongly scented.
Style 0.8–2 cm long.
