Robust perennial climbing to 15 m.. Leaves biternately pedately (6-)9-foliolate; terminal leaflet largest, coriaceous, shining green above, glabrous except for an obscure pubescence on the nerves, rounded or subtruncate at the base, shortly acuminate and apiculate, weakly sinuate-toothed, 55–70 mm. long, 32–48 mm. broad; lateral leaflets smaller and unequal-based; petiolules up to 10–32 mm. long; rhachides 25–50 mm. long; petiole 6–10 mm. long, with a pair of wart-like glands at its apex where the rhachides arise and occasionally similar glands elsewhere.. Tendrils bifid.. Dioecious.. Male flowers ± 8, subumbellate on a 34–40 mm. long peduncle and subtended by a large (26–30 mm. long, 42–52 mm. broad) very broadly cordate bract with a number of conspicuous stalked obconic reddish disk-glands on its upper surface; pedicels ± 11 mm. long; receptacle-tube broadly campanulate-obconic, 5–8 mm, long; lobes broadly triangular-ovate or oblong, subacute, bluntly keeled beneath, 6–7.5 mm. long; corolla creamy-or brownish-yellow with a dark eye; petals lingulate, rounded, 20–21 mm. long, 9–10 mm. broad, 2 with a large scale inside at the base. Stamens 3; thecae obliquely triplicate.. Female inflorescences similar to the male but uniflorous, details of ♀ flowers unknown.. Fruit firmly fleshy, ovate-pyriform, red with 8 longitudinal rows of low elongated cream tubercules and many smaller lower cream markings between them, indehiscent, 70–112 mm. long, 42–73 mm. across; peduncle 36–45 mm. long; pedicel 3–6 mm. long; subtending bract similar to that of ♂ inflorescence, 34–46 mm. long, 50–67 mm. broad.. Seeds (fig. 3/12, p. 25) biconvex, in outline resembling a tortoise viewed from above, 24 × 15 × 4 mm.; testa sculptured.
